VA offers teens shot to volunteer for summer

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, will offer a volunteer program for young adults between the ages of 13-19 starting on June 4. The program will begin with an orientation at 9 a.m in the conference room in building 200 of the main hospital. “This program is for any student looking for knowledge on medical jobs or clerical jobs,” said chief of voluntary services,’’ said Mike Kromoff. “They can also utilize the program for community services, which some high schools require now.” Students in different age groups will be doing different things for the VA. Students between 13 and 15 will be doing clerical work, which consists of filing and shredding. Students have to be 15 or older to work with patients. Some of the activities that students would be doing include helping a patient in a wheelchair get from one place to another, assisting patients or family members to get from one place to another, helping patients or family members find clinics or helping to steady a cup for a patient. Costs of cancer treatment predicted to rise

Other papers, including the Daily Mail claim that treating patients at home instead of in hospital could stop cancer treatments from “bankrupting” the UK’s healthcare system. The papers have each chosen to make stark warnings based on different aspects of the same report. The report, which projects the UK’s cancer treatment costs in 2021, was published by the private healthcare insurance company, Bupa. The report calculates that last year 318,000 people in the UK were diagnosed with cancer, with an overall cost for cancer care of £9.4 billion across NHS, private and voluntary sectors. By 2021 the number of new cancer cases is predicted to rise to 383,000 per year at an increased cost of care of £15.3 billion.
